What these are for

Choosing propulsion before the frame is cut.

Thruster selection sets more of a vehicle's design than most teams expect. The number of units and their placement decide the frame geometry; their combined stall current decides the battery and wiring; their mass and displaced volume feed straight into the buoyancy budget. Choosing propulsion late, once the chassis already exists, is the most common reason a first-build ROV ends up under-powered in current or unable to hold depth.

A working starting point for a small inspection-class ROV is four to six thrusters: four in a vectored horizontal arrangement for surge, sway and yaw, plus one or two vertical units for heave. Vectored layouts give holding authority against cross-current, which matters far more in real survey work than raw forward speed.

How to choose

Thrust, voltage and the ESC question.

Thrust and voltage go together. A thruster quoted at 4 kgf produces that figure at its rated voltage, not at whatever the battery happens to be. The same unit run at 12 V rather than 24 V produces well under half its rated thrust, so a vehicle designed around the headline number and then wired at 12 V will be badly under-propelled. Fix the bus voltage first, then read the thrust figure for that voltage.

Non-ESC or integrated ESC. An integrated-ESC thruster puts the speed controller inside the unit: fewer parts in the pressure housing, less wiring through the bulkhead, faster to commission. A non-ESC thruster keeps the controller inboard where it is easier to replace, easier to instrument, and where you can choose the controller yourself. Research platforms that expect to iterate usually prefer non-ESC; platforms being built to a fixed spec usually prefer integrated.

Rotation direction and propeller pairing. Counter-rotating pairs cancel torque. Order matched clockwise and counter-clockwise propellers deliberately rather than assuming a shipment will contain both, and confirm the propeller is rated for the thruster it is going on — an aluminium upgrade propeller changes the load on the motor as well as the thrust curve.

Depth rating is a system property, not a thruster property. A 300 m thruster on a vehicle whose enclosure is rated to 100 m gives a 100 m vehicle. Match the rating across propulsion, housings, penetrators and connectors, and take the lowest number in the chain as the real one.
