How to choose an underwater thruster for an ROV.

The right thruster is a vehicle-level decision: thrust, voltage, rotation, depth rating, control electronics and mounting all work together. Use this guide to prepare a useful specification before selecting a Blu-Sub thruster with Vebix Automation.

Start with the mission

Define what the vehicle must do before choosing a model.

Inspection, research, intervention and student ROVs have different propulsion needs. Record the intended operating environment and payload first, then compare the available propulsion options against that requirement.

01 — VEHICLE

Vehicle size and mass

Estimate dry mass, submerged buoyancy, payload and drag-producing attachments such as cameras, manipulators and tether-management hardware.

02 — MANOEUVRING

Thrust and layout

Define whether the vehicle needs horizontal propulsion, vertical heave, vectored thrust or redundancy across multiple motors.

03 — ENVIRONMENT

Depth and water conditions

Confirm the required operating depth, water temperature, salinity and likelihood of weeds, debris or sediment around the propeller.

Voltage system

Match the thruster to the vehicle power architecture. Separate 12V and 24V systems have different motor and performance options.

Thrust requirement

Use required forward, reverse and vertical control performance—not peak thrust alone—to select the number and type of thrusters.

ESC arrangement

Decide whether an external ESC suits the electronics layout or whether an integrated-ESC thruster simplifies vehicle wiring.

Rotation direction

For multi-thruster vehicles, specify clockwise and counterclockwise propeller rotation to balance reaction torque and match the layout.

Depth rating

Confirm that the pressure rating is appropriate for the operating envelope, rather than selecting around surface testing alone.

Integration details

Check mounting pattern, cable routing, penetrators, connectors, guard options and compatibility with the frame and enclosure design.
