What these are for

The autopilot decides what the airframe can become.

The flight controller is the one component that constrains everything downstream: which firmware you can run, how many actuators and sensors you can address, whether redundant IMUs and dual power inputs are available, and how much room you have to grow a payload later. It is worth over-specifying slightly relative to the current airframe, because replacing it mid-programme means re-doing integration and re-validating flight behaviour.

Pixhawk-standard hardware runs both PX4 and ArduPilot, which matters for research and defence work: it keeps the software stack open, well-documented and independent of any single vendor, and it means a student or engineer joining the project has a large public body of reference material to work from.

How to choose

Form factor, redundancy and the ecosystem around it.

Controller plus baseboard is one decision. Modular Pixhawk designs separate the flight-management unit from the carrier board that provides the connectors. The FMU sets compute and sensor redundancy; the baseboard sets what you can physically plug in and how the harness is routed. Choose them together, because a controller that fits the compute requirement but not the connector count creates an adapter problem on the bench.

Redundancy where the mission needs it. Higher-tier boards carry triple-redundant IMUs and dual power inputs. That is worth paying for on a platform carrying an expensive payload or operating beyond visual line of sight; it is over-specification on a laboratory test airframe.

Plan the whole avionics set together. GNSS or RTK receiver, telemetry radio, power module and airspeed or distance sensors all connect to the same board and must be selected against its ports and voltage rails. Ordering them piecemeal is the usual cause of an incompatible connector arriving a week before a trial.

Confirm the exact variant before ordering. Autopilot lines revise frequently and variants within a line differ in connector standard and bundled sensors. Send us the airframe, payload and firmware you intend to run and we will confirm the current SKU and what ships with it.

What we supply.

Holybro revises autopilot variants frequently, and the detailed electrical specification differs between them. The table below lists the product line and manufacturer SKU we supply rather than reproducing figures that may not match the revision currently shipping. Send us your airframe and payload and we will confirm the exact variant, its port set and the current datasheet.
