What these are for
Propulsion is a matched set, not three purchases.
Motor, ESC and propeller behave as one system. A motor produces its rated thrust only on the propeller it was characterised with, at the cell count it was rated for; change either and the current draw, efficiency and thermal behaviour all move with it. Buying the three separately on price is the usual route to a propulsion set that overheats in a hover test.
Size the set from the airframe, not the other way round. Take the all-up weight including payload and battery, apply a thrust-to-weight target — around 2:1 for a stable survey platform, higher for anything expected to manoeuvre or carry gusty-condition margin — and divide by the motor count to get the per-motor thrust each unit must produce at hover and at full throttle.
How to choose
KV, cell count, propeller and headroom.
KV against cell count. KV describes unloaded RPM per volt. A high-KV motor on a high cell count spins a small propeller very fast — the FPV pattern. A low-KV motor on the same pack turns a larger propeller more slowly, which is far more efficient in the hover-dominated flight of a survey or inspection platform. Fix the battery voltage first and read KV against it.
Larger, slower propellers win on endurance. For a given thrust, a bigger disc moving more air slowly is more efficient than a small disc moving less air quickly. If endurance is the objective, the airframe should be sized to allow the largest propeller that will physically fit without overlap.
Size the ESC above continuous draw, not at it. Rate the controller for the peak the motor pulls in an aggressive climb, with margin, and confirm its cell-count range covers the pack. An ESC run at its limit is the component that fails first, and it usually fails in flight.
